Recording with multiple people in the room — including interpreters, caregivers, and other clinicians — works with Abridge's standard recording workflow. Abridge's AI is designed to handle multi-speaker conversations and will use everything captured in the recording to generate your clinical note.
How it works
Abridge's AI predicts who is speaking during a recorded encounter — whether that's the patient, a caregiver, an interpreter, or another clinician. You do not need to identify speakers manually or change any settings before recording.
Everything spoken during the recorded conversation contributes to the generated clinical note, regardless of how many participants are in the room.
Common multi-speaker scenarios
- Caregivers present: Abridge captures and incorporates caregiver contributions to the conversation in the note.
- Interpreters: Abridge works well when an interpreter is facilitating the visit. For visits conducted in languages other than English, see Recording an encounter in multiple languages, which covers the 28 languages Abridge supports and how multi-language recording works.
- Resident or team presentations: Recording a resident's patient presentation before or during a clinical encounter is a supported use case. Use the pause and resume feature to manage transitions — see Pausing and resuming a recording for details.
FAQs
Do I need to configure anything before recording with multiple people?
No. Multi-speaker recording works with the standard Abridge workflow. No additional settings or setup are required.
Will the note correctly attribute what each speaker said?
Abridge's AI uses the full conversation context to generate an accurate clinical note. The note is not formatted as a speaker-by-speaker transcript — it synthesizes the conversation into your standard note sections (History of Present Illness, Assessment and Plan, and so on).
What if someone in the room speaks a language other than English?
Abridge supports 28 languages with high-accuracy speech recognition, outputting a fully English note. See Recording an encounter in multiple languages for the full language list and guidance.
