What Is This?
Use the Abridge web editor to record a patient encounter — in person or virtual — from your laptop or desktop. This requires your healthcare system to have enabled web recording.
Product Availability
Available to clinicians on both the Copy/Paste and EHR-integrated versions of Abridge.
Supported browsers:
- Windows: Chrome 126+ or Edge 126+
- MacOS: Chrome 126+
Not available on MacOS: capturing audio from other applications during a virtual visit (for example, sharing your entire screen or another app's audio). MacOS supports browser-tab audio for virtual visits only. Windows is recommended for virtual visits because it supports both browser-tab and other-application audio.
Do not use a mobile device browser for web recording — this feature is for desktop and laptop use only.
How to Use
Before you begin
Web recording can capture audio from headphones during virtual visits — see the virtual visit steps below. For in-person visits, use your device's built-in microphone rather than headphones.
Introducing Abridge to your patients
Obtaining patient consent and discussing Abridge with your patient is an important part of the process. Follow your organization's recommended guidelines for patient consent. Here's a sample talk track:
"I will be using a tool that records our conversation to help me write my clinical note, so I can pay more attention to our conversation and less time on the computer. Is that okay with you?"
Recording an in-person visit
- Go to notes.abridge.com on your laptop or desktop.
- Select a patient from the Worklist, or select the + icon and enter the patient's name.
- Select In-Person as the visit type.
- Select your device's microphone from the audio source dropdown. If your browser prompts you to allow microphone access, select Allow.
- Confirm the audio source shows an active indicator (a waveform, with a checkmark after you speak).
- Select the Record button to begin. To pause and resume before finishing, use the pause and record controls.
- When finished, select Stop, then select Create to generate your note.
- Your note will appear in the Worklist once it has been generated.
Recording a virtual visit
Virtual visits use two audio sources: your own microphone, and the audio from your telehealth application.
- Go to notes.abridge.com and start a new recording as above, but select Virtual as the visit type.
- For the first audio source, select your microphone or headphones from the dropdown.
- For the second audio source, select the dropdown and wait for your browser's sharing dialog to appear.
- In the browser dialog, choose Entire Screen or Browser Tab — the Window option does not work with web recording.
- Select the screen or tab where your virtual visit audio is playing.
- Turn on the "share tab/system/screen audio" toggle in the dialog box (exact wording varies by browser), then select Share.
- Confirm both audio sources show active indicators — both you and the patient need to speak for each indicator to activate.
- Select the Record button to begin, and Stop when finished.
- Select Create to generate your note. It will appear in the Worklist once ready.
FAQs
Can I use headphones while recording?
For in-person visits, use your device's built-in microphone instead of headphones. For virtual visits, headphones are supported as one of your two audio sources.
Why can't I select "Window" when sharing my screen for a virtual visit?
The Window sharing option isn't supported for web recording. Choose Entire Screen or Browser Tab instead.
