The Pediatric Well Visit note type automatically generates a structured note for preventive care visits with patients 18 and under. The history of present illness (HPI) is organized into pediatric-specific subsections — such as diet, development, and sleep — and the assessment and plan (A&P) lists Well Visit as the primary problem by default.
How Abridge determines when to generate this note type
Abridge automatically generates a Pediatric Well Visit note when all three of the following conditions are met:
- Clinician specialty: Pediatrics, Family Medicine, or Med-Peds (Internal Medicine/Pediatrics)
- Patient age: 18 years of age or younger
- Conversational context: Abridge infers the visit is a well visit from the conversation
Tip: Say the patient's age and "well visit" early in the recording to help Abridge identify the visit type reliably.
How to switch to a standard note
If the Pediatric Well Visit note type was generated but you prefer a standard note, you can switch note types after the note is generated.
Web editor (notes.abridge.com)
- Open the Note Type dropdown in the Abridge note editor.
- Select Standard.
- The note will regenerate. This may take a few moments.
Abridge Inside (Hyperspace/Haiku)
- Go to the Abridge tab in Hyperspace.
- Use the dropdown at the top of the page to change the note type.
Note: Changing the note type in Inside will disable SmartSection functionality. You will need to copy and paste the newly generated content into your final note manually.

FAQs
How does Abridge determine my specialty?
Abridge uses information from your account settings and your electronic health record (EHR) profile, when available.
Which specialties are included?
Pediatrics, Family Medicine, and Med-Peds (Internal Medicine/Pediatrics). Abridge has also built logic to capture related specialties, such as Adolescent Medicine. Pediatric subspecialties — such as Pediatric Cardiology or Pediatric Endocrinology — do not meet the criteria.
How does Abridge determine the patient's age?
Abridge uses information from the EHR when available, and from the conversation. Verbalizing the patient's age during the visit is recommended as a failsafe.
What if I see patients over 18 for wellness visits?
Clinicians specializing in general Pediatrics will still receive the Pediatric Well Visit note type for these visits. Other specialties, such as Family Medicine, will not.
Which note sections does this note type affect?
The HPI and A&P sections are affected. The HPI is structured around preventive care subsections. The A&P lists Well Visit as the primary problem.
Do my HPI settings (concise/comprehensive, bulleted/paragraph) apply?
No. HPI settings do not apply to the Pediatric Well Visit note type. The HPI structure is fixed for this note type.
Does this note type work for older children and teens?
Yes. The note content adapts to the patient's age and conversational context. Subsections relevant to older children and teens — such as substance use and sexual health — may appear when appropriate.
Does this note type affect the Physical Exam section?
No. The Pediatric Well Visit note type does not impact the Physical Exam section. Physical Exam settings and templates can be configured separately.
